You may have thought about joining a Lodge for some time, perhaps you have discussed it with friends or colleagues, or seen the Grand Lodge of England on line.
There could many reasons why you have shown an interest in our Fraternity.
Over the years we have accepted lots of men into our society who may have had thoughts of financial advantage from becoming a Freemason, nothing could be further from the truth!
Within a year or so these men lose interest in attending the Lodge meetings and eventually cease being a member of the Lodge and Freemasonry.
The following information is to explain what we are about and help you decide whether you wish to make these commitments and become a member of Freemasonry, particularly by joining the North York Lodge.
One of our principle aims is to make good men better. How do we go about this?
When someone joins Freemasonry (we refer to him as a Candidate) he progresses though defined stages in which he is encouraged to develop his character by self examination, reflection, Fraternity with other Brethren and a willingness to help others when they are in need.
These virtues evolve over many years, but commitment at the outset is the key to enjoying what Freemasonry has to offer. What we do
It is often said that you only get out of Freemasonry what you put into it!
And that requires a commitment to the Lodge.
What are those commitments?
It cannot be ignored that there is a financial cost in joining a Freemasons Lodge.
We, as Freemasons, actively encourage donations for Charitable causes, which should be a consideration for everyone joining Freemasonry.
We have different means of raising monies for Charitable purposes, but we emphasise that you should only give that which you can afford.
-
- We have an Alms collection each meeting to help any Brethren in need (typically £2 to £3)
- The Province are currently trying to raise funds for the Grand Charity. Every Brother is asked to donate £10.00 per month for 5 years.
- The Lodge also has a “Bonus Ball” for £5.00 per month with the chance of winning £20.00 each month (the proceeds of which go to Lodge Charities)
- During the meal, a raffle may be held, perhaps £2 to £5 (again proceeds go to Lodge Charities)
- The Initiation (Joining) fee is in the order of £350.00, which includes a yearly subscription of approximately £180.00 per year.
- After the Lodge meeting we usually have a meal where the Brethren sit and talk to one another, so developing comradeship in the Lodge, usually costing about £15.00.
Although some of these are optional the Joining fee and yearly subscriptions are not.
So, apart from yearly subscriptions you may have a financial outlay of £35.00 per month, can you afford that?
Joining the North York Lodge
The Lodge meets 10 times each year (excepting July & August). It is expected that each Brother attends for all of those meetings during the year.
Obviously, there will be occasions which interfere with attendance, sickness, work, holidays, or family commitments, but a regular attendance is crucial to learning and developing knowledge of Freemasonry.
We also hold some social events, Quiz nights, Race nights, ladies evenings etc, for the benefit of the Brethren, their wives, partners and family.
Attendance at these events promotes the Fraternity of the Lodge members and families where lifelong friends are often made.
If you feel you are able to meet these commitments you will be invited to a meeting where you can ask any questions and receive more detailed explanations of what Freemasonry means and what we can offer you, and just as important, what you can offer the Lodge/Freemasonry
